FIRST LOOK: “Night Always Comes” & “Ballad of a Small Player”

Summer is winding down, which means it’s time for the most wonderful time of the year. Yes, fall, but also the beginning of awards season. Netflix has provided a first look at two of its most anticipated award contenders. Take a glance at the first images for Ballad of a Small Player and Night Always Comes.

Ballad of a Small Player

Based on Lawrence Osborne’s novel The Ballad of a Small Player, comes the Colin Farrell-led film of the same name. Adapted by Rowan Joffe and directed by Edward Berger, Ballad of a Small Player follows a high-stakes gambler in Macau. As his past and his debts start to catch up with him, the gambler finds a kindred spirit who could have the answer to all of his woes.

Rounding out the cast with Farrell are Fala Chen, Deanie Ip, Alex Jennings, and Tilda Swinton. This is director Edward Berger’s latest movie, coming off the successes of Conclave and All Quiet on the Western Front. Around him, Berger has called upon his usual group of collaborators. Hair & Make Up Department Head Heike Merker worked with Berger on All Quiet on the Western Front, for which she earned an Oscar nomination. Costume designer Lisy Christl worked on All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave, for which she earned an Oscar nomination. Composer Volker Bertelmann won an Oscar for his All Quiet on the Western Front score and received a nomination for his work on Conclave. Lastly, editor Nick Emerson was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on Conclave.

Ballad of a Small Player will be in select theaters in October and on Netflix globally Oct. 29. Check out the first look photos below!

Night Always Comes

Another adaptation that’s finding its way to Netflix soon is Night Always Comes, based on Willy Vlautin’s book of the same name. The film takes place over the course of a single night as a woman risks everything to get the house she believes represents the future of her family.

Academy Award Nominee Vanessa Kirby takes the lead role of Lynette, while Jennifer Jason Leigh, Zack Gottsagen, Stephan James, Randall Park, Julia Fox, Michael Kelly, and Eli Roth make up the rest of the cast. Director Benjamin Caron is best known for his work on The Crown and Andor. Writer Sarah Conradt most recently wrote Here After and Mothers’ Instinct.
