“The Pitt” Returns to Steel City for Season 3 Shoot

Some of the stars of HBO’s hit series The Pitt have come to town. While the show takes place in Pittsburgh, most of the filming happens on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles. Ever since the first season, though, the series has made a point of shooting a few days on location in the Steel City. Each season of The Pitt is meant to mimic one day in the life of the staff working in the emergency department. One episode of the twelve-hour season is a real hour on shift, with events unfolding in real time.

The fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center uses the real-life Allegheny General Hospital on the city’s southside. Throughout the first two seasons, the series’ writers included plenty of city-specific references and jokes for those who know Pittsburgh well. One of the patients in season two was an employee of the Fort Pitt Museum who was badly injured. In turn, when two of the show’s stars, Patrick Ball and Taylor Dearden, came to Pittsburgh this week, they paid a visit to the museum. The Heinz History Center shared photos of Ball and Dearden in tri-corner hats visiting the grounds and posing with an uninjured reenactor.

Some of the show’s stars also participated in a press conference inside Allegheny General Hospital. Ball and Dearden were joined by Noah Wyle and Katherine LaNasa. After talking about their experiences shooting around the city, the stars were shown chalk art for the show drawn by Erik Greenawalt. The mural is 10ft x 15ft and took about forty hours to create.

In addition to filming exterior scenes at Allegheny General Hospital, The Pitt crew will also be filming some scenes at Max’s Allegheny Tavern. The establishment has been around since 1903 and is located in the Deutschtown Neighborhood. Little information is known about the goings-on in the scene in question, but some of the 28,000 hopeful locals who applied to be an extra will get an up-close look at the new season.

Season three of The Pitt will premiere in January 2027, and showrunners have confirmed that season three will occur on a specific date – November 12, 2026. What that means for Dr. Robby and his crew will remain a mystery for a few more months.
