Their Next Trick: The Horsemen Come Home with “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” Release

When the original Now You See Me movie came out in 2013, few people could have guessed that a film about a group of Robin Hood magicians would create a franchise. The sequel, Now You See Me 2, was released in 2016 and last year Lionsgate released the third film in the series, Now you See Me: Now You Don’t. Now available to own on 4K Ultra HD (+ Blu-ray + Digital), Blu-ray (+ Digital), DVD, and 4K Ultra HD SteelBook, Lionsgate gives viewers a chance to peek behind the curtain of the Horsemen.

It’s been ten long years since the final performance of the Horsemen, but flyers plastered around New York City promise their return if the audience can crack the code to the location. In reality, it’s not the Horsemen at all, but three scrappy illusionists, Charlie (Justice Smith), Bosco (Dominic Sessa), and June (Ariana Greenblatt), who use the imagery of the famed magicians to empty the bank account of corrupt crypto bros. Little do they realize, they’ve caught the attention of the Eye, a secret society of magicians, who puts them on a collision course with J. Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), the de facto leader of the Horsemen. The Eye has brought them, and eventually the rest of the Horsemen (Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, & Isla Fisher), to steal the Heart Diamond from Veronika Vanderberg (Rosamund Pike).

Just like the previous installments, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is a fun magic-adventure flick. It’s globetrotting and exciting, exactly what you want out of these films. The banter among the Horsemen is lived-in, but hits an all-time high when Lizzy Caplan returns as Lula. She brings a breath of life and vivacity to the film. The same goes for Pike as the villain. There’s not a piece of scenery she hasn’t chewed over the course of the film.

Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is not where the story of the Horsemen will end. A fourth film is already in the works, and the introduction of this younger group of magicians allows the wand to be passed on. While not on the same massive scale as the jet-setting adventures of a franchise like Mission: Impossible, it’s hard to deny that a long-running series of Robin Hood exploits, where magic gets less and less realistic in every iteration, has the legs to remain compelling for a few more rounds.
