The Dogs are Back in Town for STUPID CO’s May 3 Cannes Dog Event
The dogs will be coming out in full force on May 3 at the Lumiere Cinema in Los Angeles for STUPID CO’s second dog-friendly screening event. It will be part celebration for the release of Cannes Dogs 2: The Poo Edition zine, part screening of the 2003 cult classic, Gary Busey-starring Quigley, and part Los Angeles premiere of STUPID CO’s short film, French Lessons. Every ticket for the May 3 events includes both the film and the zine. All good dogs are welcome to join in the festivities with their good humans.
The idea for the Cannes Dogs zines came to creator A Color Green “with a dream.” For the intersection of film and dog lovers, there’s no prize more important or more coveted than the Palm Dog. Toby Rose, one of those people smack in the center of the film and dog lover Venn diagram, began the Palm Dog project back in 2001, before Woopets took over the event in 2023. The award’s name is a play on the Palme d'Or from the Cannes Film Festival, that event’s highest honor. The very first Palm Dog went to Otis for his performance in The Anniversary Party. Recent years have seen Messi from Anatomy of a Fall and Britney from War Pony take home the top prize.
All this to say, there are international filmmakers and critics who vote on the best canine performance from that year’s Cannes Film Festival, and A Color Green wants to get on that panel.
A Color Green’s first Cannes Dogs zine reminisces about recent winners, with an accompanying portrait of each dog. There are also sketches of more dogs, not award winners, but dogs who have won the hearts of their caretakers. A personal favorite is a maniacal-looking chihuahua drawn in the corner of one of the final pages. Even in its simple presentation, the reader can see the fury contained in the tiny dog’s shaking body.
Cannes Dogs 2: The Poo Edition is everything you loved from the first zine kicked up a notch. In the spirit of celebrating this shared love of all things dogs and movies, A Color Green opened up the zine to include:
A report from Cannes Dogs correspondent Aaron Hillis at the 2025 Palm Dog ceremony
A truth-is-stranger-than-fiction dog story on the Croisette from film programmer, artist and wine-maker Jeffrey Bowers
Top 10 Doggo Movie List from Deeper Into Movies
A loving ode to last year’s Cannes Dog event from filmmaker Ben Petrie
Much, much more.
