Comic Con: First 22 Minutes of “The Long Walk”

There’s no shortage of Stephen King adaptations hitting the silver screen and the Francis Lawrence-directed The Long Walk is the latest to make the page to screen leap. In the famed Hall H at this year’s Comic Con, after a pre-recorded message from King himself, Lionsgate debuted the new trailer for the upcoming film.

The Comic Con panel featured screenwriter J.T. Mollner, producer Roy Lee, and actors Tut Nyuot, David Jonsson, Mark Hamill, and Garrett Wareing. Hosts of the Stephen King podcast, The Kingcast, Eric Vespe and Anthony Breznican, moderated the panel discussion.

The Long Walk is adapted from Stephen King’s first novel of the same name. During the panel, Hamill revealed the shirt under his jacket that read, “Based on the novel by Richard Bachman,” a reference to the pseudonym King wrote the book under. This marks the third time Hamill has starred in a King adaptation. The Life of Chuck and Sleepwalkers are the other King works Hamill has been part of with Hamill crediting The Life of Chuck’s director, Mike Flanagan, for why he said yes to The Long Walk.

As the panel began to wind down, attendees were shown a special message from director Francis Lawrence and star Ben Wang. They introduced the first twenty-two minutes of the film, but warned the audience that some sections would be blacked out as they were deemed too intense to be screened at Comic Con.

The task is simple: walk or die. In a dystopian future, young men sign up for the Long Walk, an annual televised contest where all you have to do is walk. Walk until you are the last one standing. As the trailer shows, The Long Walk is no walk in the park.
