A Walk of Fame is Coming to Pittsburgh

Beyond the Cinerama Dome nicknamed Pittsburgh as the Hollywood of Appalachia and the city is living up to the name with the announcement of a Pittsburgh Walk of Fame. This new endeavor is the decade-long culmination of work by a group of individuals who want to celebrate the people of southwestern Pennsylvania who have shaped America.

The leadership team for the Pittsburgh Walk of Fame includes Executive Director Nancy Polinsky Johnson, President James Rudolph, Vice President Tripp Clarke, Treasurer Michael Goldstein, and Secretary Geraldine Jones. The team is comprised of civic, corporate, and community leaders who believe in the people of our region. The non-profit group’s mission is “to create a landmark honoring people with ties to the Pittsburgh region who have influenced America’s cultural heritage and to educate the public about the honorees and their accomplishments.”

While the city’s Walk of Fame will not exclusively celebrate entertainment personalities, there are certainly more than a few Pittsburghers who have left their mark on the world of film and TV. Check out film/tv inductees to the inaugural group of Pittsburgh Walk of Fame honorees:

Michael Keaton - Actor: “Born and raised in the Pittsburgh area, Keaton grew up in Kennedy and Robinson townships and graduated from Montour High School, class of 1969. After attending college in Ohio, he returned to Pittsburgh, where he worked on the production crew of the children’s TV series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, produced at the public television station WQED.”

Fred Rogers - Television Host & Producer: “Born and raised in Latrobe, Westmoreland County, Rogers later lived and worked in Pittsburgh’s East End, producing his TV show at WQED, the country’s first public television station.”

August Wilson - Playwright: “Wilson, who was born Frederick August Kittel in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, had “a fierce affection” for the neighborhood in which he was raised. His feelings ran so deep that “the Hill” serves as the setting for all but one of the plays in his famous cycle”
