Netflix’s “Nouvelle Vague” First Images

Those who love independent cinema know that the DNA of the contemporary indie movie dates back to the French New Wave. Agnes Varda and Jean-Luc Godard are often cited as the forefathers of the movement. Richard Linklater is taking audiences back in time to the birth of this revolutionary and magical era of filmmaking with Nouvelle Vague.

The film is a re-imagining of the making of Godard’s Breathless, a film that has been seen in film classes around the world. It is the essence of the French New Wave, all youthful chaos that drives creativity in a way that filmmaking had never seen before. Aspects of the medium that we take for granted now originated with Godard, Varda, and the other auteurs of the French New Wave.

Guillaume Marbeck will don Godard’s signature black sunglasses while Zoey Deuth and Aubry Dullin will play Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo, the actors who starred in Godard’s Breathless.

Nouvelle Vague will screen in select US theaters October 31, and stream on Netflix in the US November 14.
